In September of 1857, nearly 140 Arkansas emigrants camped near Enterprise in southwestern Utah. Fears that a US Army was in route to put down a supposed Mormon rebellion in Utah resulted in a siege-mentality and animosity toward the wagon train. The emigrant train was attacked without warning by Indians and later by local Mormon militia. In all, approximately 120 people were killed, mostly women and children. In 1877, 20 years after the massacre, participant John D. Lee was tried, convicted an executed by a firing squad at the scene of the massacre.
